“Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Adulthood After the Experience of Childhood Maltreatment: Does Attachment to Foster or Biological Parents Make a Difference?”
(Miljkovitch, 2026)
ARTICLE SUMMARY: This study looked at how childhood abuse and neglect can affect mental health later in life. Researchers studied 96 adults who had been removed from their families as children and placed in foster care. They found that people who had difficult or insecure relationships with their mothers were more likely to develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, having a safe and supportive relationship with a foster parent helped reduce this risk. The findings suggest that strong, caring relationships with a parent or another trusted caregiver can help protect children from the long-term effects of maltreatment and lower the chance of PTSD.
